Frequently asked questions

If your question is not here, ring the workshop and ask. We would rather answer it than have you guess.

General

What are your opening hours?

The workshop is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and Saturday from 9am to 1pm. We are closed on Sundays. For breakdowns outside those hours, ring the out-of-hours number on 07300 011336.

Where are you based?

We are at 1 Sadds Yard, Skelmersdale Road, Clacton-on-Sea, CO15 6BP. Please note we have moved within the yard: we are no longer at Unit 16-20. If your satnav takes you to the old unit, carry on to number 1.

How can I pay?

We take cash, and credit and debit cards.

MOT testing

What is checked in a motorcycle MOT?

The MOT covers lights and reflectors, steering and suspension, wheels and tyres, brakes, the frame, the exhaust and noise, the drive chain or belt, the horn, mirrors and the registration plate. It is a roadworthiness check at the time of testing and it is not a service, so it will not tell you whether your oil or chain is due.

How much is a motorcycle MOT?

£29 for a class 1 or class 2 solo motorcycle. Class 1 is up to 200cc and class 2 is over 200cc, and the price is the same either way. The DVSA sets a maximum fee of £29.65 for both classes, so our price is under the cap. Sidecar outfits are a separate DVSA class with a higher maximum, so please ring for a price on those.

What happens if my bike fails its MOT?

Because we are a full workshop rather than a test-only centre, most failures can be repaired here rather than sending you elsewhere. We will ring you first with what failed and what it will cost, and we will not start any work until you have agreed to it.

What is the difference between a failure and an advisory?

A failure means the bike does not meet the required standard and cannot be used on the road until it is put right. An advisory is a note that something is wearing and will need attention before long, but is still within limits. We will always talk you through the advisories so you know which are worth booking in now.

When is my motorcycle's first MOT due?

By the third anniversary of the bike's registration, then every year after that. If you are not sure when yours is due you can check the date free on the GOV.UK MOT history service, or ring us and we will look it up with you.

Booking and collection

How do I book my bike in?

Ring the workshop on 01255 427851, or fill in the booking form on this site and it will reach us on WhatsApp. Tell us the make, model and registration, and what you think the bike needs. We will come back to you with a date.

Can you collect my bike?

Yes. We collect from home or your workplace across Clacton, Jaywick, Holland-on-Sea, Frinton, Walton, St Osyth and the Tendring villages, and we regularly go out to Colchester and Harwich. It is particularly useful if your bike is off the road, has failed an MOT elsewhere, or simply will not start. Ring 01255 427851 to arrange a day.

Repairs and servicing

Do you work on all makes and models?

Yes. We work on motorcycles, scooters and mopeds of any make, classic and modern, from small commuters to large touring and adventure bikes. If you are not sure whether we can help with your machine, ring and ask.

Will you tell me the price before starting work?

Always. You get a price before any work happens, not after. Where a job cannot be quoted precisely until something is stripped down, we will give you a realistic range and ring you as soon as we know more. If we find the sensible course of action has changed, you hear about it before we carry on.

How much do you charge for labour?

£60 per hour plus parts. Servicing, repairs, diagnostics, tyres, brakes and suspension work are all charged at that rate. You get a price before any work starts, and where a job cannot be quoted precisely until something is stripped down we give you a realistic range and ring you as soon as we know more.

Will you fit parts I have supplied myself?

Yes, and at the same £60 per hour. We do not load the rate because you bought the part elsewhere, which is worth knowing because a lot of workshops will not take the job on at all. The one thing to be aware of is that we can only warrant our labour on a part we did not supply, so if a part fails the part itself is between you and whoever sold it. We will tell you honestly if something you have bought looks like a poor choice before we fit it rather than after.

Do you handle insurance work?

Yes. We assess and document accident damage, produce an estimate in the format insurers expect, and deal with the claim side so you are not chasing it between jobs. If somebody else was at fault, you are usually entitled to have the bike repaired at a workshop of your choosing rather than one your insurer directs you to.

My bike has a fault nobody can find. Can you help?

That is exactly the sort of work we like. Intermittent faults are the ones that cost people most elsewhere, because a bike that behaves on the ramp is easy to hand back. Tell us precisely when the problem happens, whether it is hot, cold, wet or a certain distance into a ride, and we will work to reproduce it rather than replace parts on guesswork.

Recovery

Do you recover broken down motorcycles?

Yes, including outside normal workshop hours. Ring 07300 011336 and you will get a person rather than an answerphone. The difference between us and a general recovery firm is that we take the bike to our own workshop, diagnose it and repair it, rather than dropping it at a compound.

What areas do you cover for recovery?

Clacton-on-Sea and the Tendring peninsula, including Jaywick, Holland-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, St Osyth, Weeley and Thorpe-le-Soken, plus the A133 and A120 corridors out towards Colchester and Harwich. If you are not certain you are in range, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Book your bike in

Send the details and we will come back to you within one working day to agree a date. This is a request, not a confirmation.

No email? We will confirm by phone or WhatsApp instead.

We also open WhatsApp with your details filled in, so you can add photos or ask a question. If it does not open, we still have your request. You can also ring 01255 427851.
